SEATTLE — Hundreds of Occupy Seattle demonstrators and labor groups marched and closed traffic on the University Bridge Thursday evening as part of a national day of action demanding jobs, not cuts.
Occupy Seattle demonstrators and other occupy movements nationwide are marking two months since the movement’s birth. They’re also signaling they aren’t ready to quit, despite the breakup of many of their encampments by police.
“I think [this march] is all about trying to regain people’s voice in our democracy which has been drowned out with corporate money,” said demonstrator Eric Tremblay of Coupeville.
But for commuters like Isaac Mooers, the demonstration caused many delays and bus detours even shutting down the University Bridge and a 520 off-ramp near the UW campus.
“These protesters are really working against what they want by standing out here and getting in the way of commerce and people getting home from work…all they’ll do is infuriate the voting public,” said Mooers.
The march started with a rally at 3 p.m. in the plaza at the corner of Montlake Blvd NE & NE Pacific Street across from Husky Stadium. From there, protesters marched and blocked the University Bridge until around 6 p.m. when crowds dispersed.
The demonstrations nationwide Thursday have seen hundreds of arrests from New York where at least 200 people were arrested to Portland where more than 30 people were arrested. For the most part the marches have been peaceful, with only scattered clashes between police and demonstrators.
There were no reports of arrest or clashes with police in Seattle.
