We each live in communities where we see our neighbors, friends and families who have lost their jobs or have found themselves under-employed. Our work to build a strong worker movement happens both in our workplaces as well as in our communities. That’s why members recently joined together to volunteer at a food bank and support our communities in Seattle, WA.
“With just a group of us from SEIU, we made short work of bagging up bulk quantities of donated soup mix, cereal, and rice. If the six of us had not participated, our new found friends/fellow volunteers would have been there until 9 PM and still may not have completed the work! It felt great to meet new people while giving back to the community, helping 900 families get much needed supplies of healthy food. I will do this again (and again),” said Chris Lakey, 925 member who works at University of Washington.
Ramel Fuentes echoed that sentiment: “It was great to be able to give something back to the community and neighborhood where I used to live. Volunteering at the food bank was such a rewarding experience and the task of preparing the donated food for the recipients did not feel like hard work, because we were socializing and discussing issues that matters to everyone. In the end, I benefited from giving my time too.”
