Service worker’s union hails McGinn victory as grassroots mandate to improve the quality of life in the city

Monday, November 09, 2009

mcginn victorySeattle, WA – Members of SEIU 925 – classified staff at the University and in school districts; child care providers; public defenders and other public service workers – celebrated Mike McGinn’ victory last night as Mayor-Elect. Members of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 925 – were among three labor unions to endorse Mike McGinn for Seattle Mayor.

SEIU Local 925 members endorsed McGinn because “McGinn has always supported working families,” said Ramona Brandes, public defender and SEIU member. “We look forward to working with McGinn as he reaches out to community members, environmentalists, organized labor and business to solve the problems facing our city.”

"Despite the uphill battle, SEIU Local 925 members chose to endorse McGinn based on his social justice values and his commitment to grassroots organizing,” said SEIU Local 925 President Kim Cook. "His grassroots victory is about more than one election. It's about building a community in which people – our members – want to live and work."

SEIU Local 925 reached out member to member in this election and joined the post-election volunteer efforts to contact voters and ensure every ballot was counted.
