We are devastated to learn that SEIU 925 child care provider Nicolle and her family were deported to Colombia after nearly 3 weeks in an ICE detention center in Texas. Nicolle cared for children with special needs, foster kids, and families with nowhere else to turn — now they leave a huge hole in our child care community.
This is the heartbreaking cost of a broken and cruel immigration system. Nicolle and her family need time to heal and determine their next steps, and as a union we will support whatever they choose. We will continue to advocate with the state for protections for child care providers in immigration proceedings, and to speak out against the system that ripped Nicolle away from her community and her son away from his life-saving medical treatment.
